Although Kelly O’Connor’s work incorporates fun pops of color and glitter, her aesthetic plays on much deeper themes. O’Connor’s Americana aesthetic is a commentary on the duality of the consumer.
The images that O’Connor reuses represent the blissful facades that we put on as a society. In the case of “Bottom of the Pool Arizona”, the neon and glittery appliqués juxtapose the dull, vintage images to create an unsettling understanding of the old and the new.
In “Bottom of the Pool”, O’Connor uses the untouched imagery of a cavern as the ‘bottom of the pool’ to represent idealized American landscapes. She pairs this with the sugar-coated imagery of a resort pool to showcase the differences between artificial and natural topography.
